In preparation for the first major essay of the semester, today we addressed stumbling blocks in the writing process and talked about some ways to overcome issues with writing.

Stumbling blocks included things such as: writer's block, word choice to help the reader understand what the writer was experiencing, boredom, painful, sentence formation.

Get ready - the essay is coming...

Format for the essay (I'll give you topic options Wednesday 2.15.12)

Personal narrative essay format:

Paragraph #1-The Introduction
1. Begin with an attention grabber that captures your reader’s interest.
Example:
Sometimes it takes something terrible to realize what is important in life.

Paragraph #2-4 Body Paragraphs-Your story
1. Begin each paragraph with a topic sentence. Begin this sentence with a TRANSITION that show the order that the events occurred (First, Later, In the end, Second, Third, etc.) and the details of your story.
Examples:
The day first began like any other day.

Later that day, my sister began to feel worse and my family and I began to worry.

After a day of much distress, my sister finally began to feel better.

2. This is where you tell your story. Just like any story you read, you need to make sure to have a clear beginning, middle, and an end. Make sure to describe people and places involved with vivid details.

Paragraph #5: The Conclusion
The Conclusion is just as important as the Introduction; It is the last impression your reader will get of your story.
1. Begin by re-stressing the importance of your thesis. Be careful not to use the same wording.
Example:
Although the day my sister fell ill was a horrible day for my family, it made us all realize how important we are to each other.

2. Summarize the basic events of your story.

Reflect on the larger meaning or importance of the experience described. Basically, what was the point of your story? Explain the new understanding and why/how this experience or event has a permanent effect on you.

This is the last of in class writing in preparation for a personal essay/narrative/memoir for the 'final paper' for this unit of study.

Directions: Look through the lessons from Charlie Brown, decide on one that you identify with and write about how it applies to you, how you use it in your daily life, how it helped you get through a particular situation, or something similar.

1. It’s okay to be afraid... just don’t let your fears control you.

Charlie Brown often sat in bed and spoke of his fears, but no matter how scared he was he always did the things he wanted to do.

2. Persistence wins out.
Charlie Brown often lost, failed at much, but he never gave up. Even though he knew Lucy was going to pull the football away before he could kick it.... Even though he knew the tree was going to eat his kite... Even though he knew his team would lose the ball game… he kept on trying.

3. It’s what you think of yourself that counts.
Linus carried a security blanket for years and his friends laughed at him. They also laughed at him because he
believed in the Great Pumpkin. Pigpen was a walking cloud of dust and dirt and was often regarded unkindly. Both characters, however, were always proud of themselves and believed they were as good as anybody else – and they were right.

4. Sometimes you need to talk.
One thing the “Peanuts” gang understood was the importance of talking things out. Whether leaning up against Schroeder’s piano or atop the brick wall, they always discussed what was of concern to them.

5. Sometimes you need to listen.
Even crabby, self-indulged Lucy knew the importance of listening. She started the famous Psychiatry Booth where any and all could come and be heard.

6. Do what you love to do.
Through all their adventures, Schroeder remained constant in his appreciation of Beethoven and his love of playing the piano. He loved to play piano and that’s what he did, regardless of the circumstances. Charlie Brown flew his kite, played baseball and football, not just to win (he knew he wouldn’t), but because he loved to do those things.

7. It’s important to have friends that care.
The Peanuts gang was made up of individual characters, each with their own foibles and talents, but through it all they were always there for each other.

8. Big dreams lead to big things.
Snoopy was the biggest dreamer of them all, but his wild imagination often led to even wilder, more fantastic
adventures in real life. Snoopy knew that you must have a big dream if you are going to lead a big life.

9. Action creates reality.
As Charlie Brown was reminded time and again after prodding from Linus: it takes action to bring about change. Though he often failed, Chuck took action quite regularly – and every now and again things would go his way.

10. Laugh every day!
While the kids themselves may not have seen the humor in the things they did, Schulz made sure that we did. Life is only as serious or as humorous as YOU make it. Lighten up. Go play softball. Fly a kite. Dance with your dog. Smile... it makes people wonder what you’re up to.

Dream Job Unit

1. Create an ad 8 x 10 in size of a dream job. It’s okay to fluff up credentials. Think ahead; where you’ll be. Ask yourself questions: Where you would like to live, what can you see yourself doing at age 40, what type of education, how much, where, previous experience (remember it still needs to be appropriate for a high school audience. The ad should be created in Publisher, use color, list the basic requirements someone applying for this job should possess, and have contact information.

2. Resume: may use Word or other program. List references on a separate sheet: Name of reference, contact number and association to you.

3. Create a letter of application
a. Identify job you’re applying for
b. Explain why your qualified
c. Ask for an interview

4. Follow up letter
a. Thank for the time – refer specifically to the date and time of the interview
b. Address something specific from interview
c. Express continuing interest

5. Acceptance letter
a. Acknowledge the job offer specifically.
b. Confirm when you will arrive, getting the proper paperwork, meeting with human resources person.

6. Decline letter
a. Acknowledge the job offer
b. Respectfully decline with giving a brief reason (don’t go on an on about it. You want to keep the door of opportunity open)

7. Asking for more time letter
a. Express interest in job
b. Request more time, explain a short time is needed before a decision can be made.

All letters should be done in letter format (full block - everything lines up on the left hand margin). Type everything. Turn in on time. Use class time wisely.

Make sure to use the ‘print preview’ to look at your letter before saving/printing to make sure that the text is balanced on the page with white space. In other words…the letter isn’t all squished at the top of the page.

The application letter and follow up letter will fill a page, so balance will be relatively easy. The other 3 letters are much shorter (the body section) so you will have to look at it using the print preview and space it to balance the letter out on the page. Attempt to have the same amount of white space on the top and bottom.

When this project comes in, the ad will be on top, followed the letter of application, the resume, the references and then the rest of the letters in the order that they appear on the other side of the this paper.

1. Most of us have been in a situation where we made a promise that for one reason or another we were unable to keep. When were you disappointed because someone made you a promise that they failed to keep? Or when did you break a promise that you made to someone else?

2. All of us are works in progress with a long way to go before we reach our full potential. In what skill or area are you still working to make progress?

3. Our society uses the word hero in many different ways. How do you define hero, and who is a hero in your life?

4. We all tend to judge people by their appearances, even though looks can be deceiving. Have you ever prejudged someone incorrectly based on their appearance or has someone ever prejudged you unfairly based on how you look?

What is an Annotated Bibliography?

An annotated bibliography is a list of citations to books, articles, and other resources. Each citation is followed by a brief descriptive and evaluative paragraph: the annotation. The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited. Annotations are usually about 150 words.

Annotations vs. Abstracts

Abstracts are the descriptive summaries often found at the beginning of scholarly journal articles or in subscription databases. Annotations, on the other hand, are descriptive and critical; they discuss the author's point of view, clarity, appropriateness of expression, authority, etc.

The Process

Creating an annotated bibliography calls for the application of a variety of intellectual skills: concise writing, succinct analysis, and informed library research. You will be retrieving websites, scholarly journal
articles, and books relevant to a selected topic. You will create citations for these resources using the Modern Language Association (MLA) format. You will write concise annotations that summarize the central theme and scope of the websites, articles, and books. These annotations should include one or more sentences that:

1. Evaluate the authority, background, and education of the author(s)

2. Comment on the intended audience. For whom was it written (general public/any reader, subject specialists, college students)? What skill level or education level must the reader have?

3. Compare or contrast this work with another you have cited

4. Discuss how this work explains your selected topic

Example of a Citation and Annotation

London, Herbert. "Five Myths of the Television Age." Television Quarterly 10.1 (1982): 81-89. Academic
Search Premiere. Web. 1 01 Oct. 2010.

Herbert London, the Dean of Journalism at New York University and author of several books and articlesabout the television industry, explains how television contradicts five commonly believed ideas. He uses specific examples of events seen on television, such as the assassination of John Kennedy, to illustrate his points. His examples have been selected to contradict such truisms as: "seeing is believing"; "a picture is worth a thousand words"; and "satisfaction is its own reward." London uses logical arguments to support his ideas. He does not refer to any previous works on the topic. London's style and vocabulary would make the article of interest to any reader. In comparison to Smith’s article, this source was easier to understand and more relevant to my specific topic.

You will be creating an annotated bibliography of 6 sources. This assignment is divided into multiple “parts.”

Each “part” will be given back to you with suggested corrections. You will correct and compile these parts together to create a complete annotated bibliography. It is suggested that you keep all “parts” in one Word document. This will save you time and keep all your work together and organized and make submitting the final bibliography easier. You will be using the Modern Language Association (MLA) format for your bibliography.

You must use this format consistently for each citation.

Part 1: Selecting a Topic

You will be creating an annotated bibliography that explores how various forms of media have been used in social movements around the globe. You may work with a partner. However, each person must turn in a unique annotated bibliography for the sources used. You will collaborate on source information, but each of you must do your own bibliography.

Using a web search engine (such as Google), locate reliable websites relevant to your selected topic. Select 4 websites that are most relevant to your topic. Examine these resources and create a citation and an annotation for each website. Print or E-mail me a Word attachment with these citations and annotations before midnight on 1/17/12.

Part 3: Locating Scholarly Journal Articles

Using an appropriate subscription database and appropriate search strategies, find scholarly journal articles relevant to your selected topic. Subscription databases and search strategies will be discussed in class. Select 2 scholarly articles that are most relevant to your topic. Credit will not be given for articles that are not from scholarly journals. “Scholarly” is also known as “peer reviewed” or “refereed.” These can be contrasted with “popular” magazines. These concepts will be discussed in class. Examine these resources and create a citation and an annotation for each article. Print or E-mail me a Word attachment with these citations and annotations before midnight on 1/20/12.

Part 4: The Complete Annotated Bibliography

Correct all citations and annotations and compile all parts (previously submitted to instructor) into one annotated bibliography. Use 1 inch margins for entire document and Arial font (12 point).  Discuss: general information about the country, its form of government and the central conflict that has fueled the social movement (or why the gov’t. censors media).

 What has the media’s role in the social movement had on the movement (ex. You might explain how Twitter was helpful in the protests following Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s most recent ‘election’ to office).

1. Put a star at the start of the thesis statement (color 1).

2. In the 1st body paragraph – underline any statement of evidence once (not any supporting facts to back up the evidence, just the statement of evidence) (color 2).
3. In the 2nd body paragraph – underline twice any opposing argument given (color 3).
4. In the 3rd body paragraph – underline any statement of evidence once (like in the 1st body paragraph) (color 2).

5. In the conclusion paragraph - Put a star at the restatement of the thesis statement (color 1).

This assignment was given some time ago...however, some of you have been asking about it because you haven't done it. :). So, here it is...

7 questions and essay assignment
Answer the following questions:
1. List your three favorite foods – be specific – not just cereal, but “Cap’n Crunch before it gets soggy”.

2. List your top five favorite places. They can be exotic or local – Tahiti or your favorite coffee shop.

3. List your top three favorite high school memories – things that have happened during your high school years.

4. List five things you have accomplished in your life that you are really proud of.

5. Look in your backpack. List and briefly describe some of the things that are in there. Imagine this wasn’t your backpack, but the backpack of an alien. What would you deduce about the alien based on what is in the backpack.

6. When was the last time you laughed so hard something came out of your nose? Tell the story of what happened.

7. Draw yourself talking to your admissions office representatives. IN a cartoon bubble above the ‘you’ character, write all the things you want them to know about you. Above their heads, write either what you are afraid of them saying or what you want them to say.

Next, go through and circle any words or phrases that jump out at them. Then, choose one word or phrase and tell a true story that is related to that word or phrase. This might be an admissions essay or scholarship essay that you can use in the near future!

Introduction and Recommendation: We’d all like to see changes in a school policy or procedure. Find an area at Sprague High School that you’d like to see a change made and write a justification report for it. ANSWER: Why Should We…?. Be sure and state the problem and a recommendation for solving.

Cost and Benefits: There is always some type of cost involved when change takes place. There definitely should be some benefit to the change as well. Spell these out. It may require some research. Its okay to give rough estimates as long as they are reasonable (in other words, the financial estimate is within an amount that one might expect).

Conclusion: Suggest how to implement the change that you are suggesting. Encourage the people that can make the change to do so. This would also be a place where if a timeline is available – it could go here. This report is due Tuesday, November 15. We will be sharing them in class.

Unit Assignment: Select one of the following topics for an essay. First, read the complete statement and restate it in your own words what it’s asking you to write (do this a separate page for the essay – this is not included in the word count). In most of these prompts, the statement is having you consider a view from the book as well as application to our immediate time/space. The final essay must be typed, double spaced and at least 400 words. At the end of your essay, put the word count. I will be impressed if quoted (documented) material is included quite possibly making your essay stronger! The paper is due Monday, November 28, 2012.

Once you have completed your list of 7 items (see previous blog), look through it and see if there is any word or phrase that you use more than once (or related items).

Decide on a word or phrase, and write an account of that word where you tell the story and then do a personal analysis/reflection. In other words, first describe what happened and what you were thinking, feeling when it happened and what you think or feel about it now. Then, do the personal reflection piece.

For example, perhaps your list has to do with visiting the seashore (gee, wonder why I used this topic?). So, the first part of the paragraph would recount a visit to the shore. The reflection section would then talk about what going to the seashore does for you personally. What is learned and understood by going there.

You should be working on your college research chart. There are several items to complete this project.

1. Research three paths (4 year, 2 year, Technical Trade, armed services, etc) that you are considering after graduation. The easiest way to present this information is to put it in a spreadsheet. This is due Monday, September 26.
2. Create an account at www.Finaid.org, and locate 5 scholarships you 'qualify' for. Copy and paste essay questions into a word document to turn in on Monday, September 26.
3. Either write the answer to an admissions essay question (found on most 4 year, but not 2 year school admissions application) or a scholarship essay question. Make sure and include the question! This is due on Thursday, September 22.

Here's the process paper instructions:

Instruction/Procedure Project – Technical Writing
Overview: It’s easy to overestimate what people already know especially when the procedure is almost automatic for you. Procedures require specific examples that are both visual and written to help readers follow the steps correctly.
Development: Normally instructions divide the procedure into logical steps that occur in chronological order. The steps may be interrupted by warnings, cautions, or additional notes.
Context: Instructions have the strictest requirements for clarity because they often lead to immediate action. Instructions name parts, use location and position words, and state exact measurements, weights, and dimensions. In addition, strict attention to phrasing, sentence structure, and paragraph structure must be followed. Use active voice “type in your access code” and imperative mood (begin sentence with an action verb – ‘type’ like in active voice example).
Effective Page Design: Make sure the information is readable on the page. That the figures are indexed with the written information to make following easy. Arrange all steps in numerical order, single-space within steps, double space between paragraphs (don’t indent), set off warnings ect. through font style, keep visual and step close together, don’t overwhelm that reader with excessive or inconsistent graphic patterns.
When done, ask: How effectively do these instructions enable users to complete the intended task safely, efficiently, and appropriately?

Tomorrow is Career Connections Day.

1. Students need to come to my room between 7:30 and 8:00 to pick up their files with resumes, evaluations, name tags, and vendor sheet information.

2. Students need to be at the north end of the building by 8:00 (or within a few minutes) as the buses were leaving at 8:10. YOU MAY NOT DRIVE YOURSELF or YOURSELF and FRIEND(S). You will need to meet back downstairs at 11:25 to board the buses to return to school. I don't want the chaperones have to send out a Search and Rescue...

3. Dress appropriately. If clean Levi's and a polo are the best, then wear them. No hats, big purses and you might want to wear comfortable shoes. Girls can be in slacks or dresses/skirts. Just wear the best you have - not rumbled or crumpled - make sure clothing is neat and clean.

4. You must stay in the Convention Center ~ do not wander down to Starbucks for a coffee (there is a hospitality room with beverage and fruit/muffins for employers and chaperones only) or elsewhere in the downtown area.

5. They will ride with the same chaperone to and from and know that chaperones have to take a head count and attendance.

6. My expectation is that you will be involved by doing at minimum: 3 interviews and attend the vendor fair talking to at least one vendor to gather information. You will also need to collect at least one business card from an interview so that you will have information on who to send a thank you note to (we will do the note in class).

7. Students may go on a tour of the Convention Center, but are not required to do so.

8. Everyone is taking 2nd lunch tomorrow. You will be arriving around noon - giving 30 minutes before 2nd lunch starts. You may either go sit in your 3rd period class OR sit in the commons waiting for second lunch to begin. You may not take an early (hour) lunch. If they have 4th release, they are still to wait on campus until the actual release time (If you have a 3 and 4 release - then you may leave when you return, but ONLY if you have period 3 and 4 as release). We spent the day in the library working on the computers using the Publisher software to create a flyer for an Ultimate Job (a job of your choice).
The flyer needs to be in color, have the title of the job, 4 or 5 of the top skills a person applying for the job should have, and contact information.

In addition to this flyer, students will be creating a resume (due next week), and 5 letters that would be associated with getting a job. It will take us approximately three weeks to get through this unit.

As always, if none of these strike your fancy, you may write anything on your mind. The goal is to write - not worry about grammar or spelling. Just write (for a period of about 7-10 minutes).

We then moved on to our literature books - bring it to class each day for the next 4 weeks. I read the a short story by Ernest Hemingway, The End of Something (imagine that author and yes, there is fishing involved!). Period 1 - we discussed the story and the elements of point of view and characterization.

We have been in the computer lab creating a tri-fold brochure on a topic of choice (school, age appropriate and legal) and a single page flyer. The purpose is to use graphic aides to add not only information, but interest to the reader.

The suggestion is to use Publisher (templates for both brochure and flyer) and place your specific information on. We will have 3 days in the library to complete this. To print out, you will need .75 in your account. Color is .35 a page and there will be 3 pages. When you're ready to print, let me know and I'll make sure your print command is up and running.

You were to have brought in your 'code' paper today.
We spent 30 minutes peer editing doing the following:
Using 7 colored pencils...
1. Put a triangle around the word 'it'. When you receive your paper back, look and make sure the reader understands what/who 'it' is.
2. Put an "x" over the words really and very. These two words appear to assign a 'degree', but in reality they are left open to interpretation. Make a different, more distinguishing word choice.
3. Put a circle around 'to be' verbs. Sometimes they are necessary and perform their purpose well. However, for this assignment, on your final copy remove/replace 1/2 of them.
4. [Bracket] the first word of every sentence. Is there variety? If not, make some!
5. Use 2 different colored pencils and underline each sentence alternating the colors. Look at sentence length/variety. Is there some? If not, make some!
6. Finally, read the paper backwards to look for spelling errors. It happens and our brains are so smart that if we read it the conventional way, our brain overlooks or fills in the letter(s) for us. Reading it backwards forces our brain to operate differently.

We then looked over the boy/girl advice piece.

Unfortunately, the only place I can update is on a district owned computer - hence I have to be at work to update (where I spend time grading as well). Longer Definition assignment.

This will be due 1.21.11. I have examples from several years ago to get the idea, however, I have modified the assignment so be sure and follow the sheet that was given in class on how to do this work.

Description/Definition project

Choice of: scissors, nail clippers, adjustable wrench, or needle nose pliers.

Objective:

1) Write a formal letter from you (seller/inventor) to a fictitious business/person. Include inside address, date and salutation.

a. First paragraph: introduce the product to the potential buyer. Tell a little about the co. that you are selling the item through. Explain that you think this will be ‘flying off the shelves’.

b. Second paragraph: speak in more specific terms about the product itself. Do not go into complete detail like the attached piece does, but point out the product may come in different sizes and tell about the advantages it will hold for the consumer. This is where you’d write out a formal definition.

c. Third paragraph: Welcome the opportunity to send a sample pair or come in and present a more personal approach. Acknowledge the attachment. Give a number to contact and urge the buyer to do so.

2) Break the product down and be very specific about it. This is the expanded definition section. You will use graphics along with at least one more method to expand the definition.

a. Introduction: go into more explicit detail about exactly what the product is and means to a consumer. Include a graphic that shows the entire project.

b. Description of parts: break the product into its separate parts. Name these and provide a picture of each. Point out variables that consumers may be interested in knowing (rubber coated handles (why), grooved jaws (why) etc as examples).

c. How to use and on what: define how this product is used and specially how to use them (in other words what must be done with the handles to get the jaws to operate correctly). Again, use a picture to show this operation.

3) Create a one page color ad that would be similar to what might appear in a magazine ad.
Make sure the graphics are appropriate and the description/definition is clear in regards to the product.

Procrastination is by far the biggest waster of time, no matter what you do for a living.We is all procrastinators to one degree or another. Mark Twain offered this piece of advice: "Never put off ‘til tomorrow what you can do the day after tomorrow."

The trouble is things we put off may never get done. Or when we finally get around to doing them, we're working under the pressure of a deadline, and we won't do them as well as we could have.

A Few Questions

If you're putting in fifty or sixty hours of work each week you probably don't consider yourself to be a procrastinator. You look at yourself as being a dedicated contributor to your company. But let me ask you a few pointed questions:

• Do you have a tendency to leave your unpleasant projects until the last minute?

• Do you hope that if you put off tackling some problem, it will go away, or somebody else will solve it?

• Have you ever thought to yourself that you could do a better job if you had more time?

• When you fail to get a job done on time, do you blame someone else?

• Do you set unrealistic deadlines for yourself, which almost guarantee you won't get the job done on time?

• Do you overload yourself with work, and then complain that there's too much to do?

• Are you running out of excuses and alibis to explain why your projects aren't getting done on time?

If you answer to any one of these questions is yes, you're a procrastinator! If you answered yes to more than a few of them, then your career may be in trouble.

Fear of Failure

Psychologists can cite a whole battery of reasons why people procrastinate, but the number-one reason is probably fear of failure. We postpone doing something because we're afraid we won't do it right.

This striving for perfection can stop you dead in your tracks, or slow you down so that you probably will fail.

It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Your fear of failure leads to feelings of guilt because you know you could have done a better job if only you hadn't waited until the last minute.

Has procrastination become a habit?

Procrastination is part of human nature, and we're all human. But when it becomes a habit — a consistent pattern in the way you do you job — it can have disastrous consequences. You end up spending more time in the office, not less, because you're not using your time efficiently.

Your productivity and creativity go down the drain. You're always working under pressure, with a very unpleasant result: You're unhappy with your job — and yourself.

Schedule Your Tasks

Many people keep track of all their tasks, projects, calls, and to-dos by leaving papers in piles on the desktop and Post-it Notes stuck to the walls and computer monitors. And they put off — until the last possible moment — the projects that will take the most thought, concentration, time, and energy.

Use an organizational tool

• When you speak with someone make a note

• When someone is going to send you something, schedule a follow-up to make sure you receive it.

• When your boss or teacher gives you an assignment, schedule it and begin to work on it immediately.

• When a customer and/or prospect asks you to send/fax/e-mail something, schedule it!

• Whenever anything crosses your mind that you've got to do something, schedule it inside!

The more things you schedule the greater your control over your time and your daily activities.

Do Your Important Work

View your Task List through out the day and ask yourself this question: "What is the most important task that I must do?" Don't think about it! Just Do It!

Tip: Set an alarm to remind you to start on a project early. Alarms can be set for days, weeks, and/or months in advance.

Tip: Schedule an appointment with yourself when your task is going to take some time. Check a calendar, decide when you're going to do this work, and schedule the task.

Tip: As a general rule, most tasks take more time than expected, so block out 50 percent more time than you think you'll need.

Planning Your Day

Before you go home at the end of the day, look at your Task List to see what needs to be done tomorrow. Select the most important task(s) and tackle it as soon as you arrive in the morning.

You'll find you complete twice as much work, do it in half the time, keep everybody happy, and beat the procrastination habit. Also, you'll have more time for yourself and a bit more money in your pocket.

I went over the days left in this semester and what we will be doing in general terms. The big project right now is the creation of a tall tale, myth, or legend. We will create a book in January actually making a cover and sewing the paper into the book.

Start formulating your story and it would help if you would get it typed up and saved on a flash drive or email where you will have access to it.

The font must be either 10 or 12 and make sure it's readable! For right now, just put it in a word document, don't try and format it. We use a larger paper and there is a definite format to follow and do.

This project is 'earn a grade':

"C" Book

6 pages of story (8 pages total)
illustrated cover
carefully edited
one or two illustrations (b/w or color)
effectively use class time

"B" Book

all components for a "C" with the following changes and additions:
illustrations are in color and there are 4 total
story length is now 8 pages
title page

"A" Book

all components for a "C" and "B" book with the following changes and additions:
story length - 10 pages
5 or more color illustrations
dedication page

So it would be like this ~
Page 1 - title page
Page 2 - dedication page
Page 3-12 story and illustrations*

* Your story may end on page 11 and you may use the last page, page 12 as an author page where you give information about the author (you can make a fictitious web address). Look at books and see what type of author information is included and model yours after it. It does need to take up the space.

Several Activities today:

First, Finding Forrester material is due, but before handing in, everyone grabbed 3 colored pencils and proofed the work coming in. If you have corrections to make after this editing exercise, take your paper back and bring it in next time.

To edit:
1. Put a triangle around the word “it”. Is it clear what “it” stands for? If not, clarify.
2. Put an “x” over the words “really” and “very” because they are weak. What else can you say in its place to make your writing stronger?
3. Put a circle around the following “to be” verbs: am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been (contractions too). Count up the number of circles and put on top of the paper. Then, you need to get rid of half of them!
